The verdict on Momentum Insurance
Momentum Insure is the short-term motor and home insurance arm of Momentum Group Limited, a JSE-listed financial services group whose roots trace back to 1898. Momentum Insure’s standout feature is Safety Returns, a rewards programme that pays back up to 30% of your paid premiums every year for safe behaviour, and critically, that cashback isn’t cancelled if you submit a valid claim during the year, a genuine point of difference from “claim-free bonus” models used elsewhere. Backed by a large, diversified, JSE-listed group with a long institutional pedigree even though Momentum Insure itself is a comparatively newer addition to the group’s product range, Momentum Insure is well regarded in reward-based comparison content, though independent, brand-specific ombud commentary on Momentum Insure specifically is less prominent than for the largest motor-focused brands.

A Long History Behind a Newer Motor Brand
Momentum Group’s roots run deeper than most insurers in this comparison series, even though Momentum Insure, its short-term motor and home insurance brand, is a relatively recent addition. Momentum itself traces to Momentum Life Assurers Limited, established in 1966, later drawn into the Rand Merchant Bank and then FirstRand corporate families through the 1990s. Metropolitan, the group’s other major heritage brand, dates to 1898 as Homes Trust Limited, acquired by Sanlam in 1918, merged with another Sanlam life subsidiary in 1979, renamed Metropolitan Life (MetLife) in 1985, and listed on the JSE the following year.
The modern group was formed on 31 March 2010, when Metropolitan Holdings, FirstRand, and Momentum Group entered a merger agreement: FirstRand sold its stake in Momentum to Metropolitan, Metropolitan transferred its insurance business to Momentum, and the combined entity was renamed MMI Holdings, listing on the JSE on 1 December 2010. In July 2019, MMI Holdings was renamed Momentum Metropolitan Holdings, and the group has since been renamed again to its current name, Momentum Group Limited. Momentum Insure, built to complement the group’s life, investment, and health businesses, is a newer addition layered onto this much older institutional foundation.
What Momentum Group Actually Owns
Beyond the Momentum and Metropolitan brands themselves, Momentum Group Limited owns Guardrisk, a specialist cell captive and alternative risk transfer insurer, and holds a 73.75% stake in Eris Properties, a property development and management group, with the remainder held by an employee trust and management. Momentum Group is a Level 1 B-BBEE contributor and operates beyond South Africa, with a presence in the UK, Guernsey, India, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Gibraltar, and Mauritius, spanning life, health, investment, and short-term insurance products across its various brands.
Safety Returns: Cashback You Keep, Even If You Claim
Momentum Insure’s signature feature is Safety Returns, a rewards programme available to all active car and home insurance policyholders at no additional cost. Your reward depends on your Momentum Multiply membership status, along with your Safety Score, a questionnaire covering your personal, home, and vehicle safety, and your Safe Dayz, a driving behaviour score tracked through the Momentum App. Free Multiply Starter members can earn up to 10% cashback on their paid premiums each year, while upgrading to the paid Multiply Premier tier unlocks up to 30% cashback for members who reach the highest Safety Score and Safe Dayz bands.
A claim doesn’t cost you your cashback
Momentum Insure states explicitly that your Safety Returns cashback is not penalised if you submit a valid claim, and once a claim is settled, a new rewards cycle simply begins immediately from the date of the incident. Momentum’s own published example describes a client who activated the safety features, earned the maximum Safe Dayz, completed a Safety Score, and submitted a hail claim through the app, and still reached the maximum monthly cashback tier that month. This is a meaningfully different model to “claim-free bonus” schemes elsewhere in the market.
Other Safety Features and Cover
Beyond Safety Returns, Momentum Insure bundles several safety-focused features into its car and home policies at no extra cost. Safety Alert is a free, app-based panic button giving the policyholder and one nominated loved one unlimited access to 1,800 armed responders around the clock, with real-time tracking of the responding vehicle. Accident Alert uses the same Safe Dayz technology to detect sudden stops or a sharp reduction in speed and can automatically dispatch emergency medical assistance. Momentum Assist provides 24-hour roadside, home, legal, and medical emergency assistance, and active policyholders qualify for a 30% discount on Maxidor security gates and trellis doors. Claims for windscreen damage, hail, geyser bursts, and driveable car accidents can be submitted directly through the Momentum App.
Financial Strength: What Is and Isn’t Independently Rated
This review did not find a standalone public credit rating specifically for Momentum Insure, the short-term insurance business, from an agency such as AM Best or GCR Ratings. A separate part of the group, Momentum Metropolitan Life Limited, the group’s life insurance entity, carries its own international credit opinion from Moody’s, but that rating applies to a different regulated entity and a different insurance line, life assurance rather than short-term motor and home cover, and should not be read as a rating of Momentum Insure itself. What is verifiable is the scale and capital position of the wider, JSE-listed Momentum Group, which has reported a solvency position exceeding regulatory requirements in recent results, giving Momentum Insure a well capitalised, long-established parent even without its own standalone rating on record.

Claims Reliability: Limited Brand-Specific Public Data
This review did not locate a standalone, insurer-specific Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance or National Financial Ombud Scheme complaint ratio published for Momentum Insure by the ombud itself. Momentum Insure is backed by a large, diversified, JSE-listed financial group with over a century of combined institutional history through its Metropolitan and Momentum heritage brands, even though the short-term motor and home insurance brand itself is a comparatively newer part of that group. Momentum Insure features prominently and favourably in reward-based comparison content, largely on the strength of Safety Returns, though a reader specifically looking for the kind of long-run, brand-specific ombud complaint-ratio data available for insurers like Santam or OUTsurance won’t find an equivalent public track record for Momentum Insure at this time.
Is Momentum Insure Right for You?
Momentum Insure suits buyers who are genuinely willing to engage with an app-based safety and rewards ecosystem in exchange for real, ongoing cashback, particularly those who already hold other Momentum or Multiply-linked products. It’s a strong option for buyers who want a claim to not cost them their reward, since Safety Returns’ cashback continues even after a valid claim. Buyers who want the single lowest premium with no interest in engagement-based rewards, or who specifically want a long, independently published ombud track record for the exact brand they’re buying from, may prefer a more established, single-purpose motor insurer instead.
