The verdict on MiWay

MiWay is South Africa’s first insurer built entirely for online buying and self-service, launched in February 2008 and now a wholly owned subsidiary of Santam. It sells comprehensive, third party, and total loss motor cover directly to consumers, without brokers, backed by well documented rewards like Micashback and a strong recent track record with South Africa’s insurance ombud. MiWay’s own published data shows an overturn ratio, the rate at which the ombud rules against the insurer, of just 5% in the most recent report, well below the non-life insurance industry average. For drivers who want to buy and manage a policy entirely online or through an app, MiWay is one of the more consistently well regarded direct insurers in South Africa.

Who is MiWay

MiWay launched in February 2008 as a joint venture between Sanlam, Santam, and PSG Group, built and led by René Otto, an insurance executive who had earlier created the blueprint for OUTsurance and served as its first CEO. MiWay was designed from the outset as South Africa’s first short term insurer built to sell and administer policies entirely online, a deliberate response to the rise of direct insurance competitors that were taking market share from broker led insurers like Santam. In December 2010, Santam agreed to acquire the remaining stake in MiWay from Sanlam Life Insurance for R240 million, with the deal taking effect on 1 January 2011. Some sources describe MiWay’s full integration into the Santam group as completing by 2012. Either way, MiWay has operated as a wholly owned Santam subsidiary for well over a decade, with its own licence, brand, management, and underwriting rules.

René Otto led MiWay as CEO from launch until 2022. By the time he left, MiWay employed more than 1,500 people and collected around R3 billion in annual premiums, having grown from a standing start to a firmly established medium sized insurer. MiWay is licensed as a non-life insurer and Financial Services Provider, FSP number 33970.

Car Insurance Cover and Discounts

MiWay offers four tiers of motor cover: comprehensive, third party fire and theft, third party only, and total loss, letting buyers scale cover up or down to match their budget. Every policy includes 24 hour roadside assistance, a free towing service, and the WeDrive benefit, which offers a set number of free take-me-home driver trips a year after a night out. Optional add-ons include credit shortfall cover, tyre and rim protection, and scratch and dent cover.

Micashback: 10% back every 2 years

MiWay’s best known reward pays back 10% of your premiums every two years if you remain claim-free with no break in cover. MiWay also runs an ongoing multi-vehicle discount, marketed as Insure 2 Cars, offering up to 25% off when you insure a second vehicle on the same policy. Its digital brand, Blink by MiWay, lets buyers purchase, manage, and claim entirely from a smartphone app.

How MiWay Is Financially Backed

MiWay does not publish its own standalone public credit rating from an agency like AM Best or GCR Ratings. As a wholly owned subsidiary, its underwriting capital and reinsurance arrangements sit within the broader Santam group. Santam itself carries a Financial Strength Rating of A- (Excellent) from AM Best, affirmed in December 2025, and a national scale financial strength rating of AAA(ZA) from GCR Ratings, affirmed in November 2024, both with stable outlooks. In practical terms, MiWay’s ability to pay claims rests on the same balance sheet and reinsurance programme that support Santam’s own personal lines business, even though MiWay operates under its own separate licence and brand.

Customer Satisfaction and Complaints Record

MiWay has a long history of recognition in South African customer research. It was the youngest company to win an Ask Afrika Orange Index Service award in 2011, received the Mail and Guardian Top Companies Reputation Index Award in 2014, and was named South Africa’s Best Provider of Auto and Car Insurance in the Ask Afrika Icon Brands Survey in 2019.

On more recent, independently sourced complaint data, MiWay’s own published figures report an Operational Net Sentiment Score of 77% for the 2023/2024 period, according to the DataEQ and PwC SA Insurance Sentiment Index, and an ombud overturn ratio of 6% in the 2024 report and 5% in the most recent 2025 report. Both figures sit well below the non-life insurance industry’s average overturn ratio, which the National Financial Ombud Scheme put at 16.5% for the 2024 year across all insurers. MiWay does not appear among the insurers flagged for elevated complaint ratios in OSTI or NFO annual reporting.

Is MiWay Car Insurance Right for You?

MiWay suits drivers who are comfortable managing a policy entirely online or through an app, without a broker relationship, and who want a direct insurer with a genuinely strong recent ombud track record. The Micashback reward and Insure 2 Cars discount make it a reasonable option for claim-free, multi-vehicle households looking to reduce their premium over time. Drivers who prefer face to face broker advice, or who want the option to switch between broker and direct channels, may prefer Santam’s own broker distributed personal lines business instead, since MiWay operates strictly as a direct, self-service insurer.
